1. Go Lake Swimming at St Joe State Park

On those hot Missouri summer days, there’s nothing better than taking a dip in some cool water. One of the best places for outdoor swimming is in the lakes at St Joe State Park. There are sandy, pleasant beaches at both Monsanto and Pim lakes, located within the park. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, grilling, or playing volleyball by the water.  

Please note, swimming beaches are only open during spring and summer. There are no lifeguards on site. The park is also a great venue for other outdoor recreations, including hiking, biking, and camping.


2. Explore Missouri Mines State Historic Site

In previous centuries, the Park Hills area was a center of industry, with zinc and lead mining operations providing thousands of jobs in the region. While mining has largely dried up, the evidence of these activities remains and is preserved for modern generations to learn about their history.

At the Missouri Mines State Historic Site, visitors can enjoy wandering the old buildings and machinery that once provided the economic backbone of the region. With huge factories, rusted conveyor belts, and imposing ore chutes providing an atmospheric backdrop, it’s a fun and educational place to take a walk. The outdoor areas of the site are open from dawn to dusk but are closed on holidays.  


3. Hike the Swimming Deer Trail

If you’re looking to take a walk, there are plenty of great places to go hiking in the area. One popular destination for hikers is Swimming Deer Trail, located just 20 minutes north of Park Hills, near Boone Terre. Winding through dense woodlands for more than 3 miles, it’s the perfect place to enjoy escaping from the pressures of modern life.

The dirt path is well maintained but does feature moderate elevation at points, especially close to its starting point. The path offers great views of Big River, as well as a large sinkhole, and a historic sawmill.


4. Play a Round at Terre du Lac Golf

There are few activities more relaxing than golf. Walking the green, teeing off, and enjoying a little friendly banter with friends is a great way to enjoy nature and take your mind off your worries.

Terre du Lac Country Club offers the best course in the area, with 27 holes spread across 2 separate courses, both set in pristine green space surrounded by woodlands and rolling hills.
